Post-Colonial Identity Reflected In in Almaty Restaurants

America is, famously, the “melting pot” of cultures. In my 21 years of living there, I’d become accustomed to being able to try cuisine from nearly any culture, and expect to have a good experience, with delicious food that represents the best that country has to offer. So, when I came to Central Asia, I was quite curious to see the cultural influences of the local food. In Almaty, Kazakhstan, where I spent most of my time, I tried an ample amount of both Central Asian dishes as well as ethnic food served in local restaurants.

Period Correct 1999 Red Hat Linux 6.0 Installation

I’ve had this IBM ThinkPad 385XD for a few years now. I paid only $30 for it from somebody who was about to take it to a recycler, but had mercifully decided to first post it on Craigslist in case anybody wanted it. It’s hard to see in photos, but it’s in nearly perfect condition. The only flaw on the machine is a scratch on the lid between the hinge and the status indicator lights, which I added and will regret doing for the rest of my life.

Sun Blade 150 Setup and OS Install

I’ve had this Sun Blade 150 workstation in my possession for a few months, having gotten it from a friend who was offloading some tech he no longer used nor wanted. Today, I finally decided to get it set up and fully operational. My first attempt at powering this machine on (shortly after I got it) resulted in the monitor coming on for a couple seconds, displaying an error saying there was no keyboard attached, and then shutting off.
